Abstract
The effect of penicillin (PC) and methicillin (MC) on the production of lysozyme-like substances by staphylococci was studied with the following results.
1. Staphylococci increase the production of lysozyme-like substances when they become resistant to MC, but the increase in the PC resistance does not effect the production of lysozyme-like substances.
2. Lysozyme-like substances produced by MC-sensitive staphylococci were stable in two day culture fluid, but those produced by MC-resistant strains disappear in two-day culture. The substances produced by PC-sensitive and resistant strains were stable both in one and two-day culture.
3. MC have a tendency to inhibit the production of lysozyme-like substances, but PC does not.
